Downbeat Diner Lounge - Steve's Going Away Nacho Night

Another nacho friend is leaving us for the mainland.  We will sure miss Steve at nacho nights.  In honor of him, we met at the Downbeat Diner Lounge since it is one of his favorite places to eat.  Happy hour till 7pm gets you $1 off tasty, fresh, homemade libations.  I am a sucker for anything ginger and their Rye Presbyterian does not disappoint.  Although they are not on the menu yet, the Lounge at Downbeat has nachos every night of the week. They range from $8 to $9.50 depending on the toppings you choose.  We ordered one chili, one beef and one vegetarian chicken,  They came with fresh fried chips, real cheese, onions, cilantro, tomatoes, and tomatillo sauce.  Usually they come with sour cream, but the restaurant was out for our visit.  You could definitely taste the freshness of the ingredients which is always awesome for nachos.  However, the cheese was not melted on each of our orders which makes the nachos fall apart onto the plates.  Melty cheese is essential to hold the ingredients together on the chips for each bite.  Otherwise you end up with a plate of neglected toppings.  Our bartender and server, Nick, was awesome and made sure we were well taken care of throughout the night.  Thank you Downbeat Diner Lounge for a most marvelous nacho night!

The perfect bite...

Steve: (3) Nice mound of chips and good balance of color.  RAD : Fake chicken makes my heart sing!  Salsa is really good!  Bonus points for Scarface and 90's alternative mix.  LAME : Out of sour cream.  A little cold, cheese is not melted.  Topping to Chip Ratio : 4.  Service from Nick Danger aims to please!  Much love for the extra salsa!

You will be missed Steve!

One of each please!

Vegetarian Chicken Nachos

Nacho Libra: (3.5, good chips!! Fresh cilantro & spicy salsa!! These were key.) Real cheese! Piled high  RAD : Fresh cut tomatoes and fresh cilantro - yum!  Spicy salsa - LOVE! Crispy chips.  Brought tons of extra salsa for left over chips.  LAME : Out of sour cream - sad day.  Lots of cheese not quite melted.  Topping to Chip Ratio : 3.5.  Veggie chilli topping was my fave…add the taco meat and it was the perfect bite!  Extra salsa was key.  Nick Danger is the best!  Good music in the background.

Beef nachos

Shananigans: (3.75, high potential of being amazing) Piled nicely with lots of color, abundant fresh ingredients.  RAD : Fresh chips with the perfect amount of salt.  Fresh cilantro, tomatillo salsa is FRESH and has a kick to it. Real cheese.   LAME : Out of sour cream, out of jalapenos.  But gave us as much salsa as we wanted to fix our spicy needs.  The cheese was not melted so the toppings were not glued together.  everything fell off when you tried to take a chip off the plate.  Topping to Chip Ratio : 3.5, lots of toppings, but the lack of meltiness made them all fall off.  Nick Danger is an awesome bartender and was very attentive to our table.  Loved how open they are to making custom orders.

Chilli Nachos

Lots of unmelted cheese as soon as you get under the top chips

La Migra: (3.5) Chili like Montezuma.  Taco meat looks like weird animal excrement.  Vegetarian chicken does not make sense, I prefer my chicken free range.  RAD : Traci is sitting under a cock.  Chips are grrrreat!  Tambien lo es la salsa.  I swear I've heard most of the lines said here in a porn shoot.  LAME : Most of the cheese is not melted.  Really really stinky bum asking me for change in clothes he clearly did not own saying he locked his wallet in his car and needed a dollar.  Who can unlock a door with their smell and a dollar?!  Topping to Chip Ratio : Chili was delicious.  I need guac.  Almost 1:1 on toppings, just needed the queso to be more melty to hold it together.  PBR and bacon pupu is the shit!  Depeche Mode!  I heart punctuation!!!

The toppings wanted to party with the chips...but the cheese was not melted so they just fell off

The Mysterious Don Frijoles: (4, because of a great salsa and fresh crunchy chip) Delight presentation of nacho colors, melted cheese, diced tomatoes and fresh cilantro.  RAD : The meatless chicken has a great appearance and could easily fool me.  Tomatillo salsa is awesome.  LAME : I am a jalapeno lover so I like fresh japs on top.  Topping to Chip Ratio : 3-4 ratio of chips to cheese.  The taco meat was delicious but a little lacking.  Welcome the mysterious return of Don Frijoles!  Some say he was lost in a sea of nacho cheese.  Others know he was in a deep slumber due to his undying love of one hot tamale!

Nacho Gurrl: (3) Super good.  RAD : Lots of stuff, chips are good, salsa is super good.   LAME : Meat is black and tastes over cooked.  I hate onions.  No napkins, black meat is scary.  Topping to Chip Ratio : 2.  I would come back.  Chili nachos are good!

Richard: (3) Presentation looks all right.  Toppings look good.  RAD : Extra extra salsa.  Salsa is to die for!  LAME : No sour cream.  Topping to Chip Ratio : 3.  Service was very good.

Nick Danger...thank you for being so awesome!
