The Highway Inn

Once we saw that the Highway Inn carried Hawaiian style nachos, we couldn't wait to try them.  Not everyone was set on the fact that they would be delicious but everyone was for sure satisfied.  The sweet potato ('uala) chips are piled high in a dish with a cheesy sauce, kalua pork, salsa and guac.  They put us in the back on two large tables where we could enjoy our delicious nachos with plenty of room.  It was also conveniently next to the dessert windows so more than one of the nacho connoisseurs did not get away without trying a poi filled chocolate cupcake.  The entire menu looked so very delicious and I cannot wait to come back and try more of their food.  Nacho Granny tried the loco moco and was very pleased...and this means a lot coming from one of the pickiest of the bunch.

Hawaiian Style Nachos $13.75:  Fresh `uala chips with pua`a kalua with salsa & guacamole

Nacho Cowboy (4.5) – Came in skeptical but surprisingly happy with chips, cheese, chips are awesome! RAD: CHIPS.  LAME: Took a while for waitress to address beer needs.  TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 3.5.  The nachos surprised me.

Nacho Libra (4, I love the local spin on nachos!) – Colorful!  Purple chips!  Topped with guac, sour cream and side of salsa, all the staples. RAD: Sweet potato chips are so ONO! Great crunch and flavor.  The kalua pork is perfect, sweet and salty, works awesomely.  LAME: No real cheese….could use some heat.  TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 4, had a hard time finding chips without cheese but had to order extra salsa and guac.  Great big tables in the back, right next to awesome looking desserts.  Poi-filled chocolate cupcake?! What?!

Shananigans (4.8) – Looks amazing, purple chips! RAD: 'uala chips are the best in all the land!  Kalua pig is super yummy too.  LAME: Lack of spice, nacho soup underneat the chips from the kalua pork juice.  TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 5, nice layering, cheese on all chips, lots of meat.  Good atmosphere, I want to eat everything on the menu.  Our waitress was patient with the roudy and restless (not to mention thirsty) nacho peeps.

Don Frijoles (3.5) – 7-11 style cheese sauce.  It's not good for you but it taste gooey for you.   RAD: Pico de gallo so fresh it jumps off the plate.  Ono style sweet potato chips.  LAME: No jalapenos.  Whaaa!  Shannon yelled at me!!!  TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 4, cheese sauce goes all the way.  Dam jalapenos are a nacho must.  Tasting bowls great.  Silverware is too big for the dishes.

The boys hard at work filling out there score cards!

Nacho Nick (4, too juicy) – Looks delicious, very colorful, taro chips look so good. RAD: Taro chips and kalua pork.  LAME: Nacho juice on the bottom, not real cheese, makes chips soggy it's the liquid kine.  TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 5, abundant toppings.  Rest of the menu looks awesome.

Patrick (4) – Awesome and colorful.   RAD: Uala Sweet potato chips, pulled pork.  LAME: A little soggy at the bottom, I have had better guac.  TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 4.  Fun and relaxing, I would definitely come back again.

Guacamole Haole (3) – Taro chips are super sweet and changes the "nacho game" RAD: Super smooth blend of flavors, local style.  "Da bomb"  LAME: Service…we had to go to the bar for beer.  TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 3.  The host sent me right to the spot.  Apparently she can "spot" the "nacho folks."

Nacho Granny (5) – Hey!  This isn't a plate of nachos…Nope.  Loco Moco!  Decided I was more in a loco state of mind. RAD: Not only are there two eggs on it, but two perfectly cooked eggs.  Always a bonus.  LAME: Watching the boys discover "nacho juice"  TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 2 eggs, 4 burgers and choke rice.  I'll give it a solid 5.  I heard good things about the nachos.  Gravy good.  Service was excellent.
