After a morning of boating and snorkeling, the gang we were with decided that they all wanted massages before dinner. Papa Leddy and I thought, "Instead of massages, let's go do a Father/Daughter Nacho Blog with Mai Tai's and a beach view." So we headed less than a mile down the road to Huggo's On the Rocks and ordered the nachos. During happy hour they have personal nachos for $6 but we wanted to see what the regular order was all about. Huggo's is great because it is right there (as the name states) on the rocks in the sea. Half the bar area has tables sitting in sand and then tall bartops. We scored seats on the far end that allowed us to watch the ocean and the setting sun. We also scored $6 happy hour Mai Tai's. Life was good and the nachos had not even arrived yet.
For those of you that have had the pleasure of meeting Papa Leddy, you know how rad and funny he is. If there was one person in the world I could choose to eat nachos with, it would be him. All these years of the blog and we had never had the opportunity to do so. So you can only imagine I was beyond stoked for this Father/Daughter time and to take dorky pictures with him. Those of you who know me well, you will soon see EXACTLY where I get this from.
The nachos came out in a large, round, tall, wood plate thing. They looked quite large and I knew then that my dinner appetite was going to be ruined! Shhhhh...don't tell Mar! First thing Papa Leddy noticed were the onions. Onions are not his friend. But the surplus of jalapenos made up for those treacherous creatures covering the dish. We slowly devoured as much as we could, taking notes on our smartphones and getting called out for being on our phones while we were at the bar. "It's for the Nacho Blog!" I told them hoping they would understand. Slowly the rest of our group showed up, one by one, after their massages. We all enjoyed Mai Tais and the best sunset of the trip complete even with a green flash. The nachos were far from great but it was definitely the best time I have ever had eating nachos, thanks to Papa Leddy and maybe a little help from Mother Nature.
Shananigans (3.5) - PRESENTATION: looks huge, is it really? It is it the container? The Ka'lua pork smells awesome, the cheese is glowing orange but I think I see pieces of real shredded cheese too. Lots of jalapeños. RAD: black bean corn relish is interesting. I like the two kinds of cheese. Finally! Nachos with Papa Leddy, my favorite human! LAME: chips are thin and don't hold up to the weight of the toppings. Unmelted cheese. Not very good layering. Broken little chip graveyard under the toppings. Like bottom of a squished bag of chips broken even though I think they make them in-house. TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 3.5, looks like a lot at first, then you get to the crumbled empty chip graveyard Nothing spectacular but in no way the worst nachos I've ever had. They are messy. I don't like having to eat nachos with a fork but whatevs. Smiling bartenders. Friendly locals. $6 Mai tai on happy hour.
Papa Leddy (4) - RAD: Sitting with my daughter, the Nacho Goddess in Kona Hawaii. I flew all the way here from Nevada just for this 15 minute review. Lots of jalapeños. LAME: ONIONS! damn I dislike onions! TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 4, despite the onions the jalapeños were generous and awesome. I may need more anti-acid medicine. Corn was good. Could use a little more 'red salsa'. The topping expired before reaching the depth of the chips, therefore little left to go with the chips on the bottom. We were at Hugo's on the Bay, service was excellent. Overall very little to be upset with, all was very good.
