National Nachos Day at Maria Bonita's

For National Nachos Day, Traci and I headed to Maria Bonita's in Chinatown to eat nachos together for the 3rd year in a row on this very special day.  Our friends Matt and Zach joined us for the fun.  Maria Bonita's is a quaint little Mexican restaurant that only has about 6 four-top tables.  The staff is super friendly and it is BYOB which is always a plus (unless it is No Drink November and then it just sucks).  The menu offers two kinds of nachos: regular and supreme with onions, tomatoes, cilantro, lettuce, sour cream and jalapenos.  You also have your choice of meat: carne asada, carnitas, chorizo, lengua, shredded chicken, shredded beef or veggies.  We ordered one carne asada and one carnitas.  The food came out quickly and my first thought was that they were pretty small plates for $11.49.  Aside from the size, the flavors were pretty good and we had a fun time.  I loved the salsa verde that was brought out.  Most places just have the red salsa so I am always stoked for the green.  As you can read below, the boys were lackluster in their reviews but this was their first time so we will let them slide...this time.

Nachos Supreme - $11.49

Matt (3.16) – PRESENTATION: Normal. RAD: Public restrooms. LAME: Temperature of room and barometric pressure.  TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 4.09.

Zach (3) – PRESENTATION: 3. RAD: Beans Check.  Sour Cream Check.  LAME: Meat.  Needs more heat. TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 4.

Nacho Libra (2.74) - PRESENTATION: plate is full, but not heaping...not what I expected for the price. They look tasty though! LAME: Could use guac! Still not sure how I feel about lettuce on nachos. Chips started to get soggy...  RAD: The meat and beans were yummy! I liked the fresh onions and tomatoes and extra bowls of salsa. OVERALL: they were good, but I expected more for $11.49. Liked the small, right in downtown venue.

Shananigans (3.5) – PRESENTATION: Lettuce on nachos is sacrilege.  Super small plate for $11.49.  RAD: Real cheese, fresh cilantro, fresh salsa, carne asada is flavorful, the jalapenos are those yummy picked kind that usually come with carrots.  LAME:  So small!  The carnitas is nothing special, lacks flavor.  The jalapenos were not hot enough.  TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 3.75, wtf is up with the lettuce.  Get it off my nachos. Quaint spot.  The staff is super friendly.  BYOB is rad except its No drink November.
