Sam used to live across the street from me in Waikiki. He has the most amazing dog named Rose. Whenever I would see them walking down the street, Rose would run to me and give me so much unconditional love. I miss running into them every morning! Sam was not only a Honolulu nacho connoisseur but also a good friend. One year I was celebrating my birthday at a beach party just days after my boyfriend had broken my heart and left. Still trying to have a good party and have fun with my friends, the weather decided to turn to shit and rain. Sam texted me since he knew I was trying to have my birthday party at the beach and the weather was crappy. He said we could all come to his place. He welcomed not only me, but all of my friends. He made us pizzas and cocktails and saved the day. We played one of the silliest games of homemade charades I have ever witnessed. When Sam told me he was moving to DC, I was sad to lose such a good friend. But we were both excited to see each other during the train trip.
Sam did research and took us to a place with rave reviews for nachos. It was also in an article I read about the "Best Nachos in America" so I was pretty stoked he had picked the same place. When we arrived, it was a Saturday afternoon and the bar was filled with college kids who had obviously spent the day drinking and watching football. It was so loud. I felt old complaining about the noise. We luckily found a booth and eventually a server came to us. The place was packed but after the last game ended, it got much better. We ordered the famous Swatchos and were not really that impressed. I don't say this often with nachos, but there was too much meat. They were smothered in it. And it did not really have much flavor. It did not have a bad flavor, it was just kind of bland. We decided to order the veggie nachos and see if they were any different. The veggie chili totally changed the plate. It added so much flavor to every bite. I was a huge fan of the white creamy queso and the house pickled jalapenos. I am not sure who wrote that article about best nachos in America, but I would not have put this place on that list. Regardless of the quality of the nachos, the quality time with Sam was superb and I had a fabulous evening.

Swatchos $10 - queso, pork, house pickled jalapenos
Shananigans (3.75) –
PRESENTATION: Swatchos: Paper plate, ghetto chips, liquid white
queso. RAD: White
queso, sweet house made pickled jalapenos.
Didn't skimp on the meat but it may be too much. LAME: Could use more variety of toppings. TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 4.5, didn't skimp on the toppings. Too much pork. Loved the queso but too heavy on the
pork. Too many loud and drunk 21 year
olds. I guess we are officially old when
we complain about the drunk young people at the bar. Shit.
Brandy (2) – PRESENTATION: Swatchos:
Not a lot of toppings.
RAD: White cheese was really good.
LAME: Too much meat that wasn't really seasoned well.
TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 3, a lot of cheese but too much meat. To be fair, I don't eat meat much so these
were not great to me. Really young crowd
and college kids so really loud cannot hear.
Dr. Sam (4) – PRESENTATION: Swatchos:
Surprised!
I thought it would be smaller for the price. They did not skimp on the meat.
RAD: Shannon sitting next to me! A lot for the price. $10 three people ate!
LAME: Meat was a little bland "lump pork."
TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 4, above average.
Busy, informal, good energy, crowd is younger, smoking ok.
Veggie nachos $9 - queso, veggie chili, house pickled jalapenos
Shananigans (4) – PRESENTATION: Veggie Chili Nachos: Lots of queso and those yummy jalapenos. I spy a plethora and variety of beans in that chili.
RAD: Veggie chili adds great flavor, way better than pork.
LAME: Chips are store bough standard. I don't like paper plates. Loud ass frat boys need to STFU. TOPPING
TO CHIP RATIO: 4.75. The
cheese sticks to my lips when I eat it.
I wonder if I would taste like cheese if I made out with someone right
now? Would they be like, "Hey you
taste like cheese…nom nom nom nom nom?"
Brandy (4) – PRESENTATION: Veggie Chili Nachos: Looks good, more toppings!
RAD: Cheese of course.
LAME: Not enough cheese? TOPPING
TO CHIP RATIO: 4.2,
bottom chips don't have much on them but a lot of toppings to scoop. Much more flavor on the veggie nachos than
the pork nachos.
Dr. Sam (4.375) – PRESENTATION: Looks ??????.
Paper plate is simple but subtly appropriate.
RAD: Flavor! So much
better! Zesty. Nachos are store bought but fits. Almost an extension of the paper plate set off
by good toppings.
LAME: Chips more salty this time around.
TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 5, very good.
After nachos we headed to a sports bar across the street and could not resist getting these "what the duck" shirts
