Goody Goody Bar & Grill

Since Donabed was in town for Nate’s wedding and both of those boys used to be regulars at the nacho blog when we first started it years ago, we made sure to schedule a nacho night.  I found a place we hadn’t been to on the list that had karaoke, also one of our favorite past times. The joint was Goody Goody Bar & Grill is on King Street.  I arrived early before the group to scope it out and make sure to reserve us a large enough table.  When I got there, it was just me and the bartender, Chang.  He was instantly rad.  We chatted a bit about the nacho blog and he told me I could set up wherever, even the private room if we wanted it.  I chose to stay out in the main room so we wouldn’t have to meet any kind of minimum and I wasn’t certain exactly how many people would arrive.  We posted up in a handful of the booths and luckily I brought the nacho ponchos, because it was cold with the A/C.  There were tvs all over the room playing random music videos that the group found intriguing and bizarre (I can't even explain in words, go see for yourself). After we all devoured our totchos and just as we were about to call it a night, some more friends showed up.  We decided to stay for another drink and sing a couple more songs.  Then some more friends showed up.  Pretty soon almost everyone that had come for nacho night was gone, but we had a second wave of friends celebrating Jeff’s birthday.  We sang so many songs.  The bar was pretty empty besides us and some guys playing darts so we had control of the karaoke machine.  We sang and sang and sang, and it wasn’t always pretty. I have this knack for picking songs I love that are so hard to sing and when you pair that with my lack of singing voice, it’s no bueno unless you have lots and lots of tequila.  My mom always told me the important part is to have fun!  So that’s what we did.  Eventually some other people came in and had some really good singers in their group so we decided to call it a night..

It was such a treat to spend time with old friends and especially to sing songs like the good old days of K Hut.  I definitely want to go back and hang out with Chang some more.  If you get a chance, you should check out Goody Goody bar and tell him the nacho friends say ALOHA!

For your reading pleasure, there is a bonus Nacho Granny Loco Moco Review at the end of the blog.  P.S. sorry for the blurry pics, apparently my camera phone had a few too many shots of tequila (I blame Chang).

Tater Tot Nachos - $10

Tango Tango (3.25) – PRESENTATION: A pleasant cone of taters, dotted with jalapenos and olives.  This "Mauan Kea" of tots is finished with snow (sour cream). RAD: One-room karaoke!  We were basically the only people here at 7pm, like a private event.  Courteous staff and bar.  LAME: While some other plates looked to have more toppings, ours was more sparsely populated.  Also it's chilly in here!  Bring long sleeves [or you could always borrow a nacho poncho!] TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 2.5, while the ingredients were tasty (excellently flavored ground beef), there just wasn't enough.  It would benefit from grated cheese in addition to the cheese sauce.  I may return, but probably not for nachos.  Other menu items looked good too!  Never personally been a fan of tater tot nachos, but these are okay if that is what you are looking for.

Heather (4+) – PRESENTATION: Is that jelly?  Yum, tater tots… RAD: Tater tots, salsa. LAME: Not enough meat and cheese. TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: Needs more toppings. Loved the nacho cheese on a tater tot.

Danny W. (3.5) – PRESENTATION: Approachable.  Well layered.  Bright colors.  Good pile shape (tots). RAD: Temperature on point.  Cheese forward flavor profile. LAME: Light on the olives.  Tots could use a little more time in the fryer. TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: Low topping to tot ratio, but there's enough cheese to make every tot worth it. Could possibly be a good candidate for a green salsa, but you might have to dial back the jalapenos in that case.

Katia (4) – PRESENTATION: Bueno!  I like the sour cream drizzle, pretty. RAD: Jalapenos!  Cheese & olives, TOTS! LAME: It would be nice to have different meat options. TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: Low ratio but some at bottom so nice for dipping.  Nice service.  Cold inside - NICE.  Interesting tunes.

Shananigans (3) – PRESENTATION: Pile of tots with a bunch of what you would expect toppings for totchos.  I am starving, can't wait to devour. RAD: Tots, jalapeno cheese sauce, eating nachos with chopsticks, spending time with friends I haven't been able to in years, the bartender is quick and helpful, unique music videos. LAME: Bacon would be cool, as is with all totchos, they get soggy and become totcho soup at the bottom, not enough olives. TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 3, I like the empty chips on the edge to just enjoy naked sans nacho toppings. Chang is the best bartender ever!  Definitely go check him out.  Awesome atmosphere.  Lots of booths.  The rest of the menu looks onolicious.  Dart boards and private karaoke rooms too!

Nick Nacho (3) – PRESENTATION: I'm going to eat all them tots, big pile of goodness. RAD: SALSA is like Mexican ketchup and tots need ketchup. LAME: All the ingredients probably came out of a can.  TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 4, hidden beans and ground meat surprise.  They get soggy.  Music videos create a nacho vibe!

Kristine (4) – PRESENTATION: Good colors! RAD: SO many toppings!  Also, olives. LAME: Tots at the bottom got really soggy and hard to eat. TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: Good.  We did have some extra toppings, but those were happily eaten by someone who shall remain nameless with a spoon. Karaoke should have happened [you left to early lady, we sang karaoke for hours!].  The videos provided lots of entertainment, but at the same time were kind of creepy.

Brando (3) – PRESENTATION: Excited.  Excited for a new mode of chip, aka tater tot, aka poor man's potatoes. RAD: The sour cream was so pretty. It was so pretty I dropped it on my lap and made it look like…get your mind out of the gutter. LAME: Beans, no beans!  Have to eat these tat tots with your hands because they're not crispy enough.  TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: Good ratio, it worked out in the end kind of like most movies that get funded because Hollywood is a business and art doesn't make money.  I would have given it a 4 if I was high AF.  Great dish if you are high AF.  I dig the out of the box thinking with the tots.  They pair well with the bacon wrapped asparagus.  I'm coming back…high AF.

Cliff (5) – PRESENTATION: A dish of food that looks mouth watering. RAD: The salsa.  Shannon dripping tequila on my hand. LAME: Nothing. TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 2, some more meat or black olives. Nice place, good service.

Mike A. (2) – PRESENTATION: Smells delish. Standard toppings.  #tachos RAD: Fried crispy tater. Great graphic music videos. LAME: Needs more cheese.  On second thought, they could be crispier. TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 2, needs more toppings, types of cheese, meat.

Donabed (3) – PRESENTATION: Lots of toppings, looks good. RAD: Jalapenos. LAME: Tots not crispy enough. TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 3.  Place is sick.  Tons of K Pop, J Pop & violent music videos.

Allison (1) – PRESENTATION: Looks lame kinda.  Poor distribution of toppings. RAD: Tator tots?   LAME: Fake nacho cheese.  NYS'S idea of cafeteria nachos. TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 2, meh. This bar is actually rad.  Service is awesome, rad videos.  10 for the bar!

\

Justin (3) – PRESENTATION: The most nacho-y tots I have ever seen. RAD: Meaty potatoey chips. LAME: More cheese types please. TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 2.5, served in a bowl would better distribute toppings.  Could use more crunch and spice.  Killa music videos, cool space and atmosphere.

Nacho Friend (4) – PRESENTATION: Looks more appetizing than corn chip nachos. RAD: Tater tots!!!! LAME: Needs more meat and heat. TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 4.

Ed (2.5) – PRESENTATION: Needs more cheese & meat. RAD: Wild music videos. LAME: Furniture arrangement is not conducive to large group partying.  Seats isolate tables. TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 2, toppings are piled in the middle and not enough for the amount of tots. Bartender is on point.  Drinks came fast even as happy hour came to a close.

Nacho Granny (4) – PRESENTATION: Delish!  No onions!  Oh look, an orange slice, strange… RAD: Mushrooms are rad. LAME: Eggs slightly over and under at the same time.  Very curious. TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 3.5, two burger patties and two eggs, a little off.  Large portion for one person.  I am super full.  "You're my wonderwall."
