My flight got in about 9pm on a Friday night in Kona. The ladies picked me up and we headed to
Target to pick up some tequila for the weekend. While we were wandering around
the grocery section, my eyes spotted the word “nachos” on the cooler of
Lunchables. I said, “Hey ladies, want to
do a nacho blog with me with this Nachos Cheese & Salsa Lunchable?” Without hesitation, they agreed and we
decided we would wait until we were somewhere incredibly beautiful for this
very special edition Nacho Blog.
We awoke super early Saturday to get on the road to hike
down to Pololu Valley. It was a perfect day, clear enough
to see Haleakala on Maui, as well as Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and Hualalai while
we were driving on Kohala. What a
special treat! When we finally arrived
to Pololu, it was sprinkling a little and the clouds were moving in and out of
the coast. We made our way down the
switchbacks until we arrived at a beautiful black sand beach. We walked through the forest along the beach
trying to find a dry place to eat our nachos.
Toward the end, we spotted a lovely log that we were all able to sit
upon and enjoy our snack. We ate our nachos during the only 15 minutes of sunshine that day had to offer. As soon as we were done
eating, the sprinkles came back and we decided to head back to the car. Our timing was perfect because halfway up the
switchbacks, it started to rain more and more.
It was no longer sprinkling on us.
We made it to the car just in time to get out of the downpour that was
going to be there for the rest of the day.
As for the nachos, they exceeded our expectations (granted
they were quite low). The cheese sauce
was reminiscent of that cheese from the handi-snacks we ate as a kid but more fluid. The chips were oddly small, about the size of
a dime. Perfect for a kid, but not so
much for an adult. You had to grab 3 or 4 to make it seem like a real
bite. The salsa was basically pace
picante sauce. They tasted like childhood, but the childhood of the rich kids since
all of us couldn’t afford such treats in elementary school. As lackluster as they were, we were
overflowing with nostalgia and in one of the most beautiful places in the
world. We had the beach almost to ourselves,
watching the waves crash on the black sand. The ocean came in handy when it came time to leave and
we realized we had a super messy salsa and nacho cheese covered tray to somehow
transport back. Although super convenient to carry down, it was very messy for
return transport. Nicole made her way
carefully to the waves and was able to rinse it out. Problem solved.
Thanks ladies for being as excited as me to do cheesy nacho
blogs whenever we come across anything with nachos in it and for making this
magical moment happen. Love you!
Schubey (3) - PRESENTATION: Compact chip size meant more work to eat but also MORE chips per package. RAD: Portable! Excellent for backpacking, chips were surprisingly crisp and yummy. LAME: Salsa was low-grade tostitos. Cheese was a meltier version of Handi-snax, though perhaps a step up from 7-11. TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: Extra toppings when finished with chips. Atmosphere was idyllic!
Blythe (3) - PRESENTATION: Tiny chips, "nacho cheese", salsa. Crispy chips, slightly tangy sauces, very comfort foody. Exceed expectations for freshness and tastiness. RAD: The familiarity and nostalgia of the flavors - quite delicious actually. LAME: Disposing of the packaging - messy to transport after eating, wasteful. TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 3, good ratio. Not comparable to a good restaurant nacho, but better than most service stations and movie theaters. Atmosphere at Pololu Valley was unbeatable! The sun came out just for us and it was magical.
Shananigans (3) - PRESENTATION: Conveniently separated into their own little sections. Curious about how the cold nacho cheese will taste. RAD: Super portable, this place is magical, Nicole and Blythe are sharing the log with me. If you are a product of the 80s, you will probably like these. LAME: The chips are too small to pick up with my giant adult hands. They must be perfect for little kids. TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 3, anytime you get to dip your own, the ratio is usually pretty good. I am not a fan of tomatoes so I stayed away from the salsa. One of the most magical nacho experiences of my life! Thank you!
