Nacho Night at Hula's - Keeping it classy by candlelight

Hulas is a fun gay bar at the Diamond Head side of Waiks. The views of Kapiolani Park, Diamond Head and sunset are epic from this second floor location. The cafe inside has 3 kinds of nachos on the menu.

The Works - $10 - spicy cheddar & pepper jack, black beans, tomatoes, green onion, guacamole, sour cream, black olives and jalapenos

The Tropical - $10 - kalua pork, spicy cheddar & pepper jack, pineapple salsa, olives and chipotle cream

The Side - $4 - tortilla chips, nacho cheese, sliced jalapeno

We ordered a couple of each and soon found out they were way larger than expected. Luckily there were some late arrivals that helped us clean the plates.  No nacho left behind! The small side nachos were a steal for $4 for bar food.  It was open-mic night so there was an eclectic mix of music and comedy performed by the eclectic mix of people that makes up Hulas (LBGT) and more!

Maile: (?) Sad tat we arrived late!  Lots of cheesy chips left, though!  RAD : Guacamole!  I can never have too much.   LAME : Not a fan of pineapple on my nachos or my pizza.  Topping to Chip Ratio : ?  Can't give a valid review since I didn't get the whole nachos experience, but usually nachos are gross after everyone's had a chance to pick and these were not bad.

Jesse: (4) Tyler was a good server!  RAD : Pineapple topping added a different element.  LAME : Too much olives.  Topping to Chip Ratio : Could use more toppings, evenly spaced.

Nacho Granny: (4) Very large portions and nice presentation.  RAD : I actually liked the guacamole!  LAME : No sour cream…  Topping to Chip Ratio : Looked promising until you start digging.  Classic Nachos however had cheese to spare.  Tyler was great!  Music was awesome.  Company was the best!  Brokeback Monday!!

Unholy Frijole: (4) Bigger than advertised, always a good thing.  Very shareable.  RAD : Huge.  Cheddar AND nacho cheese.  LAME : Needs more jalapenos, but I'm just slutty for jalapenos.  Topping to Chip Ratio : 3.  Good live music! Taught everyone the Frankennacho - when one plate has a bunch of empty chips and one plate has a plethora of cheese, mix them into monsters and keep eating.

Nacho Libra: (3.5, Tropical ones were my fave tonight!) Big!  Big ol chips.  Huge dollops of guac.  RAD : Real Cheese!!  They do also have a variety with nacho cheese - something for everyone!  Fresh tomatoes.  I like the pork and pineapple combo, with chipotle cream.  LAME : Too many empty chips.  Sides of salsa would be perfect.  Topping to Chip Ratio : 3.4, (4 for plain nacho cheese ones - covered in cheese!).  Waikiki at sunset can't be beat!  The second set….WOW…I have no words.

Schubey: (3) Nice heaping pile.  RAD : Tropical nachos with kahlua pork and chipotle cream/pineapple salsa.  Loads of guacamole on the works - SCORE!  Traditional nachos with cheese and jalapenos - BUENO deal at $4.  LAME : I feel like the works were mostly guacamole (which is great) but not much more.  Needs more beans or some meat to be truly "the works."  Topping to Chip Ratio : 3, could be better.  $6.50 coronas - fucking B.S. man.  Cute waiters (gay boys).

lots of empty chips:(

Guacamole Haole: (4) Nachos and candlelight, keep it classy  RAD : Live music and open air, guacamole.  LAME : Beautiful men who don't like me.  Topping to Chip Ratio : 3.  I like my nachos like my men!  Hot, spicy, sweet and cheesy.  Of course Hulas knows nachos, they know men! Nacho Nacho Man.

Shananigans: (4 - tropical, 3.5 - works, 3.5 - classic) Big plates, piled tall.  Sauce drizzled on very eye appealing.  RAD : 3 kinds of nachos, chipotle cream, guacamole was simple, yet delish.    LAME : Empty chips after first layer consumed, not enough meat and beans.  Needs more spice!  Topping to Chip Ratio : 3.75, good toppings, but lots of empty chips on the bottom. Except for the classic, they were smothered in cheese sauce.  Nom nom nom nom nom.  Extremely helpful staff from the bartenders to our server, Tyler.  It was a little dark to take pics and see what we were eating, but the candlelight ambiance was nice in a way.  I am guessing it was open mic night with all the different performers?  There was some amazing talent throughout the evening.  A transgender blew our mind when he/she got up and shredded some punk rock and Danzig.
