I met my friend Kellen for sunset and dinner and we were
blessed with one of the most amazing sunsets EVER! It totally made up for the crappy chicken
nacholada that we had for dinner. When
he arrived, the sun was just starting to disappear behind the plethora of dark
clouds. Slowly the clouds started
glowing with a thin line of orange light outlining their shapes in the sky
towards Ewa. As each minute passed, it got
better and better. At its peak the sky
was glowing orange and red so bright you almost needed sunglasses. Oh how I wished I had my suit on so I could
have been floating in the water that was reflectively painted the deep oranges
and reds. It lasted for quite some time
and we were both thankful that we had made it to the beach for this lovely sky.
Then we went to dinner.
We wanted Mexican, but Mexican in Waikiki is a joke. Settling on Harbor Pub, we slowly navigated
through the maze of the Hilton Hawaiian Village finally finding an alley in a
parking garage that got us to the main street.
Harbor Pub was packed with no open tables. We saw someone checking out and waited for
them to leave. As we were waiting, a
group of 3 guys came up next to us and the waiter proceeded to clear the table
we were waiting for to give it to those guys.
Since they had more people than us, we did not cause a fuss and took the
small two top nearby. Happy hour goes
till 7pm so we were able to get some cheap drinks and $1 any nacho order. Harbor Pub has lots of nachos, like 4 kinds
plus 2 kinds of nacholadas which are basically the nachos separate with
ingredients on one plate and the chips served separately. We chose the chicken. An eternity later when they finally came out,
I noticed there were not any jalapenos. I
kindly asked for a side and tried to slowly eat so that I did not get full
before they came out. Eventually I
accepted the fact that the jalapenos were never coming out. In fact the remainder of our meal we felt
like we were at some little kids table in the corner that was neglected and
ignored. Then we ran out of chips and
still had a pile of toppings. I
attempted to waive our server down but he did not see me. We just sat there looking at the toppings with
no way to get them in our belly. And
then finally we got his attention and more chips were served. It was about this time we found the treasure
of some crispy baked cheese on the plate.
It was brown and crunchy and it took a lot of kindness in me to share it
with Kellen. As we finished the dish, I
realized I had not taken any pictures.
So all you get is the aftermath photos (and the EPIC sunset pics after).
OVERALL (3) - PRESENTATION: Basket of nothing special nacho
chips and plate of average looking toppings delivered separately to the
table. We don’t have to worry about
having soggy chips at least. We can
scoop the toppings and make the perfect nacho.
RAD: I am always stoked with olives on my nachos. Although I normally
think that lettuce on nachos is sacrilege, for some reason it worked with the nacholada. Maybe because I could pretend I was eating a
healthy “nacho salad.” Finding the one
piece of crispy burnt cheese was definitely the highlight. LAME: We ordered chicken but only found a few
pieces of bland chicken cubes. No
jalapenos. Not spicy at all, not even a
little. Salsa was at least trying to be
and had something there, but not much.
Forgetting to bring my jalapenos out made me sad. Running out of chips and not being able to
finish the toppings is just cruel. Why
offer to bring us more chips if we need them and then disappear when we
do. TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 4, you make
your own so it is pretty good but running out of chips knocked it down a
little. You can’t eat the toppings
without any chips.
