Sancho Pistolas in Philly - MAINLAND EDITION

I found a guy who wrote about nachos in Philly and he recommended this place in the neighborhood.  We weren't incredibly hungry, but in the pursuit of the nacho blog we ordered a plate to share. I was intrigued from the first glance at the menu when it stated one of the toppings as "extremely expensive cheese."  They also had a section on the menu that was called "Chips Friends" which had things like pico de gallo and 3 varieties of guacamole.  Clever.  We sat at the bar top and a gentleman next to us inquired as to what we were doing with the score cards and silly picture taking. We told him we were writing a nacho blog and he was super stoked.  I asked if he wanted a score card and to join us and he jumped at the opportunity. Yay for new nacho friends!

I liked the bar.  They had unique and yummy drinks but a bit too expensive for somewhere I would frequent.  The nachos, however, were some of the best I have tasted.  The meat was wonderfully seasoned and the pickled onions were the perfect topping choice.  The extremely expensive cheese was delightful.  I wish I was more hungry at the time because I would have devoured this delectable dish.

Nachos - $12, really expensive cheese, crema, tomato, refried beans, cilantro, jalapeno, onion.  add cecina beef, chicken tinga, or spicy pork $5

Wanye Sangria (4.5) – PRESENTATION: Sweet fade of toppings, expensive cheese. RAD: Volcanic river of grease, crispy edges on spicy pork, red pickled onion, fresh jalapenos. LAME: Cheese needs to be, maybe spread it out mannnnnnn.  TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 4.5, excellent, just a little more toppings to chips.  We met Nacho Jefe.  Service not very inspired, but nice enough.

Nacho Jefe (5) – PRESENTATION: Nice!  These look delicious.  Spicy pork! RAD: Topping to chip balance is 50/50. LAME: More cheese.  TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: fresh 50/50.  You can finish it.  It’s a challenge but a happy one!

Shananigans (4.48) – PRESENTATION: Excited about this “extremely expensive cheese.”  Meat is only on ½, probably to showcase the expensive cheese. RAD: Pickled onion, chips crunchy, pork super flavorful with burnt edges.  Made new nacho friend.  LAME: These aren’t in Hawaii.  Real cheese makes chips take all the toppings away from the top layer.  Unmelted cheese when you peer under and into the mound. TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO:  4.2, lots of toppings, empty chips fill up with toppings as you eat.  These rival those yummy nachos at Little Goat Diner in Chicago. Prince’s Kiss came on and I was a happy girl.  Bartender was so so.  We were behind a pillar so sometimes were neglected with empty glasses.

Spoon Ferguson (4.2) – PRESENTATION: Unique and picturesque.  It has peaked everyone’s interests.  Looks beautiful but the meat is piled mostly to one side.  Maybe on purpose…still very interested.  Lots of items melteddd.  RAD: Whole pieces of pork were delicious and jalapenos were spicy.  The pink pickled onions peaked through the platter with beauty.  LAME: The beautiful mountain of toppings would tumble down the plate.  Tough to get a full nacho naturally. TOPPING TO CHIP RATIO: 4.4, we are halfway done with the nachos and the toppings are still all over the chips.  Very well done.  This rocks, wish this was a full time job. Fun times.  Human next to us joined in and grabbed a rating sheet (from Michigan, not Philly).  Strong beers!  Really expensive cheese.
